Bible Verse to Memorize: Matthew 22:39b, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Our key word this week is helper. We are talking about how we are the church as Catholic Christians. That means we help show God’s love to all.

Students have a “hand” where they’ll write inside what they do to help others at school.

Spelling Words: The short o pattern:

on socks school
odd box went
lots fox
spots off
stop not
rock friend

D.O.L.: Second grade will have their first English test on Wednesday. To practice we’ll find mistakes in a paragraph with capitals and ending marks missing or wrong.

Scatter: To move away or spread.

Show and Tell: Students will share their book reports. They look fantastic! We’ll also finish sharing the leaves. Our Starred Attraction, who can bring in pictures or special things, is Alex T. and our speaker is Alexa.

NOTES:

*This Thursday morning we have a field trip to Baggenstos’ farm to look at how a farm works. We’ll be creating farm families in class after we discuss how our country makes laws and votes. Second grade will return for lunch and at the end of the week take home the pumpkins they choose.

*Today at lunch we had a parent meeting for anyone that wanted to help out in the classroom. If you missed it, please send me a note. I would love to have your help. As well, we are still looking for someone to organize our book orders and take photos. The book orderer can do it from home.

*The Class of the Month theme is to create a class basket of candy for Life Works. Information will be in the SAM.

*Halloween is coming soon. We’ll have a classroom party on Oct. 31st at 2:00.

Students may dress up and you can help decorate a family pumpkin to be judged in the morning.

*Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian organization that goes into countries to provide help for children that are suffering. They spread the gospel, and at Christmas, provide shoeboxes with little gifts including a bible. Our class is making shoeboxes that are due by mid-November. If you want more details please go to www.samaritan’spurse.org

*Students have the vocabulary words in their backpacks to play games with our reading stories this week.

Mon Sept. 29th.

Bible Verse to Memorize: Psalms 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd. I have everything I need.”

This week the verse is a little longer, but I know the students can memorize it. We’ll learn a song to help them.

Spelling Words: The short e pattern

tell yes

*D.O.L.: Second grade is working on remembering to capitalize names and the beginning of sentences, so we’ll review that and ending marks this week.

*Show and Tell: It is a special week for Elle as the Starred Attraction and Alex E. as our speaker. They can share all week, but we’ll all share our leaves, as well. Next week everyone will share their book reports.

NOTES:

*Thank you drivers that went on our field trip to Tryon Creek. I hope you enjoyed the hike.

*I attached twelve words today that are sight and vocabulary words for the two stories in our reading book. I have shown the students how to cut them up and sort them, play “Go Fish” and “Lotto” and how to alphabetize. Please have your children spend one of the nights of reading to play these games.

*”Book It” begins in October! Sponsored by Pizza Hut, children will read twenty minutes five times per week and mark it, with your signature, on the reading calendar. Then we’ll give them a certificate for a free personal pizza at the end of the month. The program runs from Oct. through March. Please remember to turn in September’s reading calendar next Monday with your and your child’s signature on it.

*Oct. 9th second grade will have their first English test over Unit One. It is on sentences and ending marks. Part of homework NEXT week will be to do the Unit Checkup in their English book (p. 48 – 50). If you want to get a jump on it you can start this week, but the book report poster is due next Monday so you can do the Checkup for Unit 1 next week.

*If you have any egg cartons at home, please send them to school. We’ll use them to make a friendship garden this week.

*Next week students will have a family tree to complete with your help. It will ask for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles names.

*This Friday is the last day for Pennies for Patients (Class of the Month). It’s also free dress.

*Monday Oct. 5th there will be a parent helper meeting for those interested. If you can’t make the meeting please send me a note with what you want to do.

Have a beautiful fall week!
