Principal Thoughts from Mrs. Holub

Dear Families at St. John Fisher,

I would like to begin by thanking each and every one of you for your support throughout this week. The events from Tuesday’s lockdown are an unfortunate reminder for all of us that the instabilities of individuals can cause one to loose sense of security. Our community has once again shown our greatest strength-the community love for our great school. We will continue to provide your children with a safe environment as we have done for close to fifty years.

I am aware that some families want further clarification regarding the exact content of the unidentified caller’s threat. Following the recommendations from Portland police and the Archdiocese Department of Catholic Schools, I have chosen not to release specific details about the call to the community because it could compromise law enforcements investigation of the call. Although rumors will abound in situations like this, it is important to follow the procedures established to provide the greatest safety for our children.

After dismissal on Tuesday, the faculty gathered to de-brief how the situation played out. We will continue to analyze the scenario as a faculty and with the officers from Portland police, but are reaffirmed in the feedback Portland police have given us as they commended us on our professionalism and handling of this event. It was a first for our community, but reality is that these types of scenarios happen each day around the world. I certainly hope it does not become common practice for our community, but am proud of the way the faculty, students and parents reacted to the event.

Throughout the week we will continue to keep pickup from the classrooms and ask that all students enter through the main entrance of the school. We have been encouraged to bring back “business as usual,” but slow and steady wins the race. Thanks for understanding.

I hope we all use this upcoming Tuesday’s PTC meeting as a time for celebration for our school and community. We will be having a special giveaway with our new school logo and an exciting opportunity for a tuition credit will be announced. Hope to see you there at 6pm!

Another exciting event next week is our schools spring musical. Ms. Bjore and her group of talented superstars will shine Thursday evening at 7pm to show Sound of Music.

I wish all Mom’s a special Mother’s Day and am looking forward to another successful week at St. John Fisher!

Principal Thoughts from Mrs. Holub

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT MEMO
Everything You Wanted to Know
Week of April 28, 2008

PRINCIPAL THOUGHTS FROM MRS. HOLUB

The hustle and bustle of the past weeks activities led to a calm and “back to business” mode for St. John Fisher this past week. We had an amazing time at Jesuit High School for our Jog-A-Thon last Friday. A huge “Thank You” goes out to our four chairs, Marie Del Toro, Sue Grabe, Heather Radich, and Lisa Tillisch. Their hard work and effort led to over $19,000 raised for our school. After a morning of running, the afternoon was reserved to showcase our student’s talents at our Talent Show. Special thanks to our student board members and Darlene Sheridan, our second grade teacher, for organizing this event. We were all entertained! Our parish annual Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday was a great time for members of all ages in our community. Kathleen O’Donnell and Terri Strauss, our Spaghetti Dinner chairs, led an amazing number of volunteers feeding hundreds of people. There are numerous helpers that assisted towards the success of these events as well. Thank you to all who volunteered and/or sponsored these fund, and fun, raising events! We could not have done it without you!

On Wednesday night we celebrated the academic success of our thirty-eight seventh and eighth graders who had the distinguished honor of joining the National Honor Society. Congratulations on your achievements and keep up the hard work as we finish the year.

Looking ahead to next week, our community celebrates the second grade on Sunday as they receive the sacrament of Holy Communion. What a special time for the youth of our community as they join the long tradition of our Catholic Faith and fully receive Jesus Christ. We continue religious celebrations next Wednesday at our May Crowning ceremony at 2:15. Please see the attached flyer for further details regarding this event. Hope to see you all there!

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend as it begins to feel a bit more like spring.

Principal Thoughts from Mrs. Holub

Using the words (and sign language) from our kindergarten class, “What a Wonderful World” it was last night with our Literary Fair. This event was a great time to join as a community and celebrate the accomplishments of our students. Thank you to all the teachers for working with the students preparing them for this fun evening and to all the friends and family who attended.

As this busy week continues, I think we are all looking forward to the Jog-A-Thon Friday morning. We will begin heading over to Jesuit at 8:25 with “opening ceremonies” beginning at 9:00. Our kindergarten through fourth grade students will jog from approximately 9:45 till 10:45 and our fifth through eighth graders will jog from approximately 10:45-11:45. We will participate rain or shine so please dress in layers to accommodate any morning showers. After lunch, we will have our talent show beginning at 1:00 on our main stage in the gymnasium. The week concludes with the spaghetti dinner on Sunday from 3-7. Tickets can be purchased through the office on Friday or at the door Sunday. Hope to see you there!

Looking ahead to next week, our seventh and eighth grade scholars will celebrate being inducted into the National Honor Society on Wednesday at 7pm. This distinguished group of students, who have maintained a 3.2 GPA for five of the last six trimesters, have the honor of joining this nationwide society. Congratulations to you! On Thursday, May 1st, our fourth grade will head on the Oregon Trail Overnight. Have a safe trip and we will look forward to hearing about the adventure!

In closing, let’s all say a prayer for sunny weather for our Jog-A-Thon!
