While the new approach will result in higher costs for each
participant in each sport, it will allow the program to move
forward on a more secure financial footing, no longer dependent
on annual fundraising activities to cover the cost of the athlete
participation subsidy. Due to declining revenues from the Sally
Foster gift-wrap program- down 50% over the past two years- it
was necessary to make this change.
Also, we have eliminated other elective expenses that have
contributed to the subsidy deficit.
We believe this is the most responsible way to move the
program forward and we will continue to look for innovative ways
to support the program and keep participation costs as low as
possible. Moreover,
the new costs are in line with those charged by other CYO
programs in the city and remain a competitive value when compared
to other athletic opportunities within the greater Portland area.
Please note that the fee structure for the 2010-2011 year does
not include a provision for the development and maintenance of a
cash reserve for the program to cover recurring operating
expenses, e.g., new/replacement uniforms and equipment.
To establish this important safety net, the program will
continue to operate the snack bar, host tournament games and
conduct other minor fundraising to develop and maintain the
operating reserve.
SJF CYO is grateful to the PTC for granting an additional
allocation of Family Volunteer Hours (FVH) for hours worked in
the snack bar and as gym monitors during the season.
Details on these FVH opportunities will be available as
the school year approaches.
