Dear CYO Parents,

As we prepare to begin basketball season, the SJF CYO athletic board would like to bring you up to date on some changes we have adopted for this season.  One significant change from years past is the participation fee structure that we will employ.  Rather than continue the past practice of subsidizing the participation fee for athletes, we have adopted a new fee structure for the coming year that will cover the entire participation fee for each athlete in each sport.  The table below details the fees and the costs that go into them (Track fees will be published in spring, 2011):

While the new approach will result in higher costs for each participant in each sport, it will allow the program to move forward on a more secure financial footing, no longer dependent on annual fundraising activities to cover the cost of the athlete participation subsidy. Due to declining revenues from the Sally Foster gift-wrap program- down 50% over the past two years- it was necessary to make this change.   Also, we have eliminated other elective expenses that have contributed to the subsidy deficit.  We believe this is the most responsible way to move the program forward and we will continue to look for innovative ways to support the program and keep participation costs as low as possible.  Moreover, the new costs are in line with those charged by other CYO programs in the city and remain a competitive value when compared to other athletic opportunities within the greater Portland area.

Please note that the fee structure for the 2010-2011 year does not include a provision for the development and maintenance of a cash reserve for the program to cover recurring operating expenses, e.g., new/replacement uniforms and equipment.  To establish this important safety net, the program will continue to operate the snack bar, host tournament games and conduct other minor fundraising to develop and maintain the operating reserve.  SJF CYO is grateful to the PTC for granting an additional allocation of Family Volunteer Hours (FVH) for hours worked in the snack bar and as gym monitors during the season.  We depend on volunteers to help us keep costs as low as possible and hope that you will respond to our periodic requests for volunteer assistance.

If you have questions or comments about this new fee structure or about SJF CYO in general, please contact Matt Osborn, SFJ CYO Athletic Director, at matt_osborn@comcast.net.
