1st Grade Students
Dear Parents,
Hello and welcome to the First Grade!
The year has started out with a very busy and productive day. We spent the day getting to know one another along with what is expected of us as first graders. We also learned who runs the show around the classroom. That would be me, Mrs. Grenz. Feel free to call me Joanne. Marci Herberholz is my assistant and the students call her Mrs. H. Besides learning rules and procedures, we completed a few activities and even did a little work.
There is a great deal of information that I would like to share with you over the next few days and at Back to School Night. I plan to send frequent notes home as I cover the topics in class. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Following this note you will find a list of topics that the students and I will be discussing today.
Although summertime may be a difficult thing to say goodbye to, this fall will be a blast! Many fun filled lessons and projects are in store! I look forward to getting to know you and your child. For those of you that I have had the joy of teaching an older sibling, I am excited to become a part of your daily routine again!
It is with great ideas and excitement that I begin this school year. I thank you for sending your child to this school and into my classroom.
Sincerely,
Joanne Grenz
Take Home Folders
Please look for a Take Home folder every night. It will carry notes from me as well as homework assignments and completed work. There may be times that it will be empty. We will send it home anyway. This folder is also a great way to send me a note or information. It will be checked first thing every morning.
There will be a Homework slip in the folders every Monday through Thursday nights. Homework will usually be reading and is to be done orally. A parent's signature is required each night after completion. More details concerning homework and its role as a first grade too are to come.
Snacks
Snacks play a very important role in first grade. It is time taken each day to refuel our bodies and our brains while having a little “down” time. It is requested that every student have a small snack of a “healthy” variety every day. Especially on half days.
Encourage: yogurts, crackers, cheese, fruit, granola bars, trail mix, veggie sticks, cereal, bagels etc. Avoid: candy, donuts, cookies, sugar cereals etc.
Birthdays
Every student has an opportunity to celebrate their birthday. We celebrate it by singing to them and letting them pick a book out of the Birthday Box. Treats are permitted. I encourage you to continue your last year’s practice of choosing healthy treats. Please avoid cupcakes if you can as they tend to make a large mess in the classroom.
To schedule a birthday, just send in a note or talk to me about which day(s) you would like. We will do our best to work it out. Although parents are welcome, you do not have to be present. The treat can be left with us in the morning and we will take care of the celebration.
August birthdays are asked to celebrate in September and July birthdays, in June.
