Mr. Olekas' Current Events                        Mr. Kolbet Current Events

Steve Olekas:

I was born in Dayton, Ohio and I am a graduate of Chaminade High School and Wright State University where I obtained my B.S. degree in Comprehensive Science in Secondary Education.  I have been a science geek with a love of the great outdoors all of my life.

Volunteering in summer camps for disadvantaged youths in Ohio led me to teaching. I found that Middle School is the age level that I am most comfortable with.  I truly enjoy teaching and being a part in the lives of these ever-changing students. Teaching has given me a great purpose and obviously, never a dull moment.  I want all students who enter my classroom to feel safe to interact, have fun and enjoy the challenges of learning about science and the wonderful world around them. My hobbies and interests are cooking, fishing, gardening, and enjoying my wonderful family, including the “zoo” of animals and plants in our home.

Scott Kolbet:

I have been the pastoral associate at St. John Fisher since 2001 teaching 7th grade religion for all of those years.  I have a BA in Religion and MA in Theology mainly because I love learning about the faith.  The focus for 7th grade is “To know and follow Christ” as we learn about the New Testament and Morality.  My hope is that the Christian faith becomes a personal experience as we grow more fully in community at St. John Fisher.

When not teaching (or working in the parish), I enjoy playing with my children, time with my wife, and making wood toys in my garage.

Mr. Olekas Current Events:

Welcome back to all St. John Fisher Students and Families:

I am really excited about returning to school and hope everyone has enjoyed a wonderful summer. I am looking forward to another great year with all the Middle School students.

I had a wonderful summer with my family, and spent a week fishing in Alaska so I’ll have many stories to tell about my trip.  But I also had lots of chores and hard work to do over the summer including painting the house, staining the patio deck and gardening. This gave me a lot of time to think of all the neat experiments that we are going to do in our science classes this year. I have ordered a lot of new science equipment and added new experiments to our science curriculum. So get ready for some real science fun! With so many new labs we will need a great deal of help in keeping the classroom clean and the lab equipment in tip-top shape. There will be plenty of experiments and a chance for all students to become Scientists.

This year’s Outdoor School information for the 6th grade students will be sent home on Tuesday, 9/7. We will be leaving on Sunday, October 3rd from Robert Gray Middle School and will return to Robert Gray Middle School on Friday afternoon, October 8th. Parents, please look for the packet of information coming home with your 6th grade student.

I look forward to an exciting year at St. John Fisher and hope you’re all rested and ready for a fantastic school year!

Mr. Kolbet Current Events:

Welcome to 7th grade religion!

The theme for 7th grade is:  “To know and follow Christ.”  The 7th grade religion class is really 2 classes:  New Testament in the first half of the year and Morality in the 2nd half.

In our study of the New Testament we will look at what the New Testament is, how it came to be, how we read it and what it says.  We focus much of our time on the gospels.  We will also be using the video Jesus of Nazareth that shows the entire story of Jesus and gives a good picture of what life might have looked like in 1st century Israel.

Grades for New Testament will consist of homework assignments (worksheets, short answer assignments, paragraphs, etc.) and tests.  I always give the students a 1-week warning of upcoming tests.  I also provide review sheets and we do some review in class.

The students will also have a weekly “Challenge Question” that they should research and answer.  These are assigned on Monday and due the following Monday.

In regards to homework, I will post the assignment on the board in the 7th grade classroom and on the school website.  Homework is due the next class period unless noted otherwise.  This means if it is assigned on Tuesday, it is due Thursday, Thursday’s due on Monday, and so on.  This can be awkward because of the varied schedule, but the students will get used to it.  Late work is accepted at a lower grade.

Homework for the first week

Tuesday – Correct the Bible Literacy Quiz

Thursday – Map of Israel

If you ever have concerns, please feel free to call me at 244-4945 x3 or e-mail at scottk@johnfisher.org

I look forward to furthering your child’s religious knowledge and faith.  God bless.
