Amy Lawrence:

I was born and raised in Portland.  I went to Central Catholic High School and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in psychology.  After graduation I became a golf professional and spent several years in that field.  I decided to make a career change and went to graduate school at Concordia University and earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching.

It was my experiences as a student at Central Catholic High School that made me want to be a teacher.  The teachers were more like family and had a very positive impact in my life.  They took a genuine interest in me and my family and there was a real sense of community.  I loved the Catholic  values and faith dimension as well as the academic environment.

I like to spend my free time with my family doing most anything outdoors.  I love to walk, run, hike, bike, raft, ski, and snowshoe.  I also love to read, listen to music and go to concerts and sporting events.  I like to travel, get out on foot and explore the world.

Ms. Lawrence's Current Events:

Welcome to 6th Grade

Greetings to all of you!  I am really looking forward to having you all again.  I want to extend a warm welcome to our new students, Andres Giesemann and Chris Perry.  We will do our best to make you feel at home.

I thought I would take this opportunity to mention some upcoming calendar events.  The first day of school is Tuesday and classes will be dismissed at noon.  The Outdoor School dates have been decided and our 6th graders will be going to the Sandy River site on October 3rd.  Mr. Olekas, their science teacher, will get you all the details soon.  He is planning on giving the kids their Outdoor School packets on the first day of school so please ask them for it.  I hope to see you all at Back to School night on September 22nd.  It should be quite informative.  Mr. Olekas can answer all of your Outdoor School questions and Lori Day can answer all of your technology related questions.  I will attempt to answer everything pertaining to 6th grade homeroom.

For those of you who have had me before, you probably remember the homework journal.  The kids will be encouraged to fill out their homework journal daily, however, I won’t be requiring a signature from you.  I will not be checking their homework journal.  It is their responsibility.  I will fill out homework alerts daily for missing work which you are required to sign and return the following day.

Once you receive your new handbook at Back to School Night, I encourage you to read it carefully since there are a few changes.  You are required to sign the final page which ensures that you have read and gone over it with your kids.  The signature page must be returned to me right away.  Page 16 goes over the new food policies.  No homemade goods are allowed for parties.  Treats must be store bought and have nutrition labels.  I also encourage you to read page 19 regarding volunteer requirements.  Background checks expire every three years so make sure you are up to date on that and have completed all of the Called to Protect training if you are planning on volunteering or chaperoning in any grade level.  These policies will be strictly enforced by all staff members.

If you need to contact me, e-mail is probably the best way.  I can respond much more quickly by e-mail than by phone but you are welcome to call and leave a message as well.  You are also welcome to write a note and send it in with your child, just remind them to give it to me.

I look forward to seeing you all again.  Here’s to a great year!

Amy
